North West Indian Ocean Deployment - 1986
The HMAS Canberra deployed to the Indian Ocean in 1986, the ship departed Sydney on the 14 of April 1986 on completion of workups in the East Australian Exercise Area off the New South Wales coast.
The Captain of the ship was Commander R.R.P Spencer the Executive Officer was LCDR Warren Smith RAN.
The Ships Company had a handfull of members of the Commissioning Crew and the first of the Operational Crew.
During the deployment the Ships Company conducted a Crossing of the Line Ceremony, a Canberra Cup race day, various steel deck BBQ's on the Flight Deck, a ships Concert, Mini Olympics and Kite Flyex.
The ship departed Sydney on the 14 April 1986 and arrived in Western Australian waters 21 April departing 06 May 1986, the ship berthed at Fremantle and then Fleet Base West HMAS Stirling.
The ship participated in a Freedom of the City in Darwin and a Shop Window in Darwin waters prior to departure to Singapore on the 19 May 1986. A crossing of the line ceremony whilst en route to Singapore.
The ship arrived in Singapore 25 May and departed on the 02 June 1986, transtited the Malacca strait prior to arrival at Cochin India for a Port visit 07-10 June 1986. Departing Cochin the ship sailed to Seychelles for a visit 15-18 June 1986.
The ship departed for Mombassa in Kenya, on the east coast of Africa for a Port visit 21-25 June 1986. The ship then visited Port Louis, Mauritius 30 June - 02 July 1986
The ship departed Mauritius for a direct steam to Darwin that took 2 weeks to complete arriving Darwin 15 July 1986, finally departing for Sydney and arriving back home on the 25 July 1986.
It is interesting to note that HMAS Canberra was the only Australian Warship to deploy to the North West Indian Ocean Deployments in 1983 and 1986 where the crew was not awarded a Australian Service Medal - Middle East as the Deployment was deemed not a declared operation in November 2002.
